CULTURAL OCCUPATIONS BY SEX AND AGE

OVERVIEW

According to the 2011 Census, of all persons employed in cultural occupations nationally, 9% (27,589) resided in Western Australia. This was 3% of all employed persons in Western Australia. The highest employing cultural occupations were graphic designers (1,881), ministers of religion (1,678), library technician (1,515), architectural draftsperson (1,491) and architect (1,361).

The cultural occupation that employed the largest proportion of persons in Western Australia were library technicians (22%). In contrast, only 3% of both book or script editors, and broadcast transmitter operators resided in Western Australia.

EMPLOYMENT BY SEX

More males (13,925) than females (13,665) were employed in cultural occupations in Western Australia. There were also more males than females employed in cultural occupations nationally.

The majority of sound technicians (98%) and light technicians (93%) employed in cultural occupations in Western Australia were male. All make-up artists (100%), and the majority of classified advertising clerks (95%), and library technicians (92%) were female.

EMPLOYMENT BY AGE

Persons aged 15 to 24 years made up 12% of all persons employed in cultural occupations in Western Australia which was above the national average of 10%. The cultural occupations with the largest number of employed persons aged 15 to 24 years were graphic designer (262), music teacher (private tuition) (227), architectural draftsperson (199), dance teacher (private tuition) (184), and urban and regional planner (139).

The cultural occupations with the highest number of persons aged 55 years and over in Western Australia were minister of religion (578), library technician (466), librarian (323), architect (309) and music teacher (private tuition) (224).

The cultural occupation with the highest proportion of persons aged 55 years and over was civil celebrant (64%). In contrast, only 3% of persons employed in each of the cultural occupations of dancers or choreographers, make-up artists, production assistants (film, television, radio or stage), advertising specialists, and web developers were aged 55 years and over.
